Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Store met a packed auditorium, when he visited BUC in Drammen to talk about how both people, and countries can make a difference.

In a half hour lecture Store talked about Norway's role in the world, and how the events in the world affects us, although we are a small country far to the north.

The audience consisted of both students and staff, and they were presented with interesting and precise analysis by the Foreign Minister.

Some of the topics:

How Norway - despite it's small population - through natural resources, and developement of knowledge has become an important player in the world.

How the power in the world is moving from the north and west to the south and east.

How we have gone from a bipolar thinking during the Cold War - to one pole (U.S.) and now a multipol system - with many powerful players.

How this is good in many ways - while it also has made it more difficult to reach an agreement on important topics such as environment, climate change and trade.

Studying human rights

- You are lucky to be studying at this great school, but we are also lucky, because you choose to take an education in human rights, said the Minister.

He predicts that human rights will become increasingly important as a subject, and as a profession, because people in a lot of countries will be struggling to break free from oppression and autocracy.

- One effect of this is going to be that we can no longer just look at human rights in a western perspective. New non-western countries will also claim ownership to these values, and this is a good thing, said Store.
